On the evening of Saturday 8 November, visitors of the Cairo Festival City mall located in New Cairo were surprised by forty musicians appearing suddenly in the central courtyard and the balconies overlooking it.

Within a minute, a conductor emerged on a podium and the orchestra began playing the first movement of Mozart's Symphony no. 40, a well-known piece to many listeners, even those not particularly interested in this music genre.

Around 40 musicians participated in the performance. As the musicians played, passersby began to gather and café-goers took photos.

A few listeners conversed with the musicians after their flash set.

"I know this music but I can't remember from where," one of the mall's visitors told Ahram Online. "It was a lovely surprise to find them all performing in a public place."

Flashmobs are hardly known to the Egyptian culture, and as such the event attracted a particular attention.

According to mall's personnel, the same flashmob was organised on Wednesday 5 November and Thursday 6 November and part of the mall's celebration of its first anniversary.
