The veteran midfielder says a Ghana comeback should not be taken as granted after the appointment of Avram Grant as the Black Stars boss
Veteran midfielder Michael Essien said on Wednesday the appointment of Avram Grant as Ghana's new coach doesn't mean that he willautomaticallyreturn to the Black Stars fold.
Israeli Grant has been named as Ghana boss last week, replacing sacked coach Kwesi Appiah.
Several reports suggested that AC Milan midfielder Essien, who was suspended from international duty after refusing to warm-up against Portugal in a World Cup game, will return to Ghana after the arrival of the former Chelsea manager.
Essien was a key player of Chelsea when Grant was in charge of the Premier League club in 2008.
"I don’t know about comebacks or anything of that sort," Essien told the Guardian on Wednesday.
"As I have said in the recent past we will see. There is no guarantee that he will even call me up anyway so it’s a bit of a hypothetical question and if he does we will see."
The 32-year-old heaped praise on Grant, saying that he is confident the experience of the former Portsmouth coach will be a great asset to Ghana.
"He is a good coach and I am sure he will bring all his experiences to the Ghana job. It’s not going to be easy, but I have no doubt he will give it 100%," Essien added.
