A 42-year-old man in Sohag was reported to be the 21st case of bird flu in 2014, according to a health ministry statement on Monday.

The man's condition is now stable, as he is receiving treatment with the anti-viral drug Tamiflu. He was reported to have had direct contact with poultry.

The symptoms appeared last Friday, then he went to the hospital on Saturday, the ministry said.

According to the statement, eight cases were cured, four are being treated, and nine died of the H5N1 virus this year.

Bird flu first appeared in Egypt in 2006, with 72 deaths so far.

The Egyptian health ministry called on all citizens that handle poultry to seek immediate examination once symptoms start to appear, while strictly advising them to cover their noses and mouths as they handle any kind of domesticated birds.
