Twenty-five hardcore supporters of Cairo club Ahly were detained on Tuesday after attempting to storm a basketball arena to attend a game against bitter rivals Zamalek.
Basketball matches between Egypt's Cairo clubs are held behind closed doors due to lingering security concerns.
The Ultras Ahlawy members were apprehended at the club headquarters, with the security forces confiscating firecrackers, Ahram's Arabic news website reported.
There is no love lost between the ardent group of Ahly fans and Egyptian police, with regular confrontations taking place in football, handball and basketball games.
