Project exploring Swiss, Egyptian art scenes kicks off with talk in Cairo

The Swiss arts council Pro Helvetia will kick off a new project on critical approaches to contemporary visual art in Egypt and Switzerland


Pro Helvetia,a Swiss arts council that aims to foster cultural interaction between Switzerland and other countries, is launching a new project topromote critical approaches to contemporary visual art in both Switzerland and Egypt.

The project, which will deal with visual art from the beginning of the 21st century until today, will start with a panel discussion in Cairo about the trends of contemporary visual art in Egypt and Switzerland. The panel will be led bySwiss art critic and historian Pablo Mueller and Egyptian artist and critic Youssef Limoud.

"The two lecturers will examine and analyse the different art schools and movements in each country, as it develops from the modern to the contemporary, and from this historical perspective, the focus will be on the current art scene in each country, with its problems, circumstances and factors that shape its tendencies," the council announced on its Facebook page.

The panelwill take place at Pro Helvetia's Cairo studio--4 El-Nabatat St., Garden City --on Thursday 22 January at 6:30pm.

Further events related to the topic will be organised in both Egypt and Switzerland throughout 2015.
