Egypt's Socialist Popular Alliance Party (SPAP) has filed a legal complaint against the interior minister and top police officials after officers on Friday stormed its office in Alexandria.

The party announced in a press conference Saturday that it is demanding an investigation into the incident.

Party members said on the party's Facebook page that police ransacked the contents of the office, which it had rented only two days earlier.

The party was set to hold a meeting to plan a commemoration event for its late member Shaimaa El-Sabbagh when the police stormed its space.

El-Sabbagh was killed on 24 January after she was hit with birdshots as police dispersed a memorial march for the victims of the January 25 Revolution in Downtown Cairo.

Shortly after her death, the Ministry of Religious Endowments refused to allow the Party to reserve a hall in Omar Makram Mosque in Downtown Cairo for a wake for El-Sabagh.

Egyptian prosecutors are currently investigating the death of El-Sabbagh, 32, but have placed a media gag order on the case.

Her death caused a local and international outcry, with many criticising security forces for using excessive force in dispersing the peaceful march.

The SPAP accused the police of "premeditated murder" while police officials denied that security forces had a role in El-Sabbagh’s death.
