Turkish police on Wednesday arrested an armed man who stormed an office of Turkey's ruling party in Istanbul, breaking windows and unfurling a flag from an upper floor.

Security forces launched an operation to detain the man who had occupied the local offices of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Kartal on the Asian side of Istanbul, the Dogan news agency reported.

Reports said that the man was armed but there was no indication that weapons had been used. After breaking windows, he unfurled a Turkish flag with a sword motif.

The incident came at a time of high tension in Turkey after a prosecutor was held hostage Tuesday by leftists militants and later died in hospital of gunshot wounds.

However there was no suggestion of any link between the two incidents.
