A huge fire broke out on Tuesday at a garment factory in Cairo's working-class district of Ain Shams, the Ahram Arabic news website has reported.

Initial inquiries revealed that the fire started on the second and third floors of a ten-storey residential building.

Nearby residents hurried to evacuate their homes, fearing that the fire might spread.

However, no deaths or injuries have been reported.

Around 10 fire engines were sent to the scene to help extinguish the flames, Civil Defence Authority spokesperson Mamdouh Abdel Kader told Ahram Arabic.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, according to the head of the Cairo Security Directorate Osama Bedeir.
