Egypt ministers of defence, interior agree on 'improved' strategies in Sinai

Sinai tribes have offered police and army help in their fight against "terrorism"


Egypt’s defence and interior ministers spoke of improving common strategies to fighting “criminal operations” in Sinai, during their visit to security sites in the peninsula, the Ahram Arabic news website reported on Wednesday.

Defence Minister Sedki Sobhi and Interior Minister Magdy Abd El-Ghaffar stressed the importance of maintaining the highest levels of alertness and preparation.

The ministers visited several security checkpoints and Central Security Forces camps in North Sinai.

They spoke with security personnel and awarded some with free Hajj Islamic pilgrimage trips to Mecca this year.

On Tuesday, in his monthly speech to the nation, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi praised the role of Sinai residents role in fighting “terrorism”.

Some Sinai tribes recently announced that they are ready to fight alongside the police and the army.

Islamist militant groups in Sinai have staged deadly attacks against police and army personnel, leaving hundreds killed over the past two years.
