Beloved Egyptian actor Omar Sharif died on Friday aged 83, leaving behind a legacy of over a hundred films
Egypt's legendary film actor Omar Sharif is to be buried on Sunday and a funeral service will be held at Cairo's Mushir Tantawi Mosque, Sameh El-Sorayti, a member of the Actors Syndicate, told Ahram Online.
The 83-year-old died on Friday of a heart attack in a Cairo hospital, his longtime agent, London-based Steve Kenis, said in a statement.
Following noon prayers, the funeral service will be held then the late actor will be buried at El-Sayeda Nafisa cemetery in southern Cairo, El-Sorayti said.
Sharif had been suffering from Alzheimer’sdisease for three year, which forced him to step out of the spotlight and retire., his son Tarek had told Spanish paper El Mundo in May.
Sharif was born in Alexandria to Syrian-Lebanese parents, who named him Michelle Chalhoub.
Sharif's fame was guaranteed following his role in David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962), for which he earned an Oscar's nomination for best supporting and a Golden Globe Award for best supporting actor, as well as in Dr Zhivago (1965), for which he won a Golden Globe Award for best actor.
He is one of the golden age heroes of Egyptian cinema for his films A Man in Our House (1961), A Love Rumour (1959), Struggle on the Nile (1959), The River of Love (1960) and many others.
