Turkey: Soldier killed in new PKK attack
AP, Tuesday 11 Aug 2015

Turkish military say Kurdish rebels attacked an infantry brigade command in southeast Turkey, killing a soldier.

A military statement said rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, opened fire at the Akdizin base in Sirnak province early Tuesday. The soldier died of his wounds in hospital.

The attack follows a day of violence in Turkey, which left nine people dead. Among them were a soldier and four police officers who were killed in two separate attacks in Sirnak, which borders Iraq.

Turkey has seen a sharp spike in clashes between security forces and Kurdish rebels in recent weeks. At least 48 people have died during the renewed violence.

Turkish warplanes have raided PKK targets in Iraq in tandem with airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria
