Angry truck drivers have blocked the only remaining open border crossing between Serbia and Croatia to protest against Zagreb's decision to allow in only cargo vehicles with "perishable goods."

"Truck drivers fully blocked no-man's land in both directions at the Batrovci-Bajakovo border crossing so the traffic is blocked for all vehicles until further notice," a national traffic organisation said Wednesday.

On Monday, Croatia blocked trucks coming from Serbia in a bid to pressure Belgrade to redirect the influx of migrants and refugees towards Hungary and Romania.

More than 44,000 refugees fleeing conflicts and poverty in their countries in Middle East and Africa entered the Balkan country from Serbia over a week, with a record 9,000 on Tuesday alone.

Previously, Croatia had closed seven of its eight crossings with Serbia in a bid to slow the flow of people arriving.

Serbia has threatened to impose counter-measures unless a solution was found by midnight on Wednesday, but refused to provide details on what such measures would entail.

Meanwhile, Croatia has reopened the nearby Tovarnik-Sid border crossing for car traffic, while trucks are redirected in and out of Croatia through neighbouring Bosnia.
