NMEC director receives France Knight of the Order of Arts and Literature

France offered the NMEC director the government’s highest award for his devotion to Egyptology and Egyptian archaeologists


At a gala ceremony at the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo (IFAO), a group of French and Egyptian archaeologists and faculty professors gathered to join Khaled El-Enany, Director of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (MNEC), during his honorary event.

The French government decided to award him the French Chevalier (knight) of the Order of Arts and Literature for his wonderful achievements in archaeological studies and all the efforts he exerted to preserve Egypt's heritage and create a strong bridge of cooperation between Egypt and France in the field of archaeology.

He also helped junior Egyptian archaeologists and curators to develop their skills to meet their counterparts abroad through sharing in the establishment of workshops on research methodology in Egyptology.

El-Enany received his PhD from Montpellier University in France and then began his academic career at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management at Helwan University, where he rose through the ranks.

While at Helwan, El-Enany was director of the Open Learning Centre, head of the Tourism Guidance Department, vice-dean for Education and Student Affairs and a professor of Egyptology. He is also an associate scientific expert and member of the board of administration at the IFAO and a visiting professor at Montpellier III. He has lectured in France and Switzerland.

Among the attendees of the event, which took place in Al-Mounira area in downtown Cairo, was the Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh Eldamaty, former Minister of Higher Education Mohamed El-Nashar, foremer Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim, former Fayoum Governor Hazem Atteyatallah and French Ambassador to Egypt André Parent.

The Order ofArts and Literature is a French order that was established by the Minister of Culture in 1957 and its supplementary status to the Ordre National du Mérite was confirmed by President Charles de Gaulle in 1963. Its purpose is the recognition of significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields.
