April 6 Movement demands former NDP members be banned from Egypt politics

Upcoming elections must be free of leftover NDP elements, says April 6's Mohamed Adel

The April 6th Movement has released a statement demanding that the military council and the government of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf bans members of the former ruling National Democratic Party from running in the upcoming elections for parliament, the Shura council and the local council.

Mohamed Adel, member of the movement’s political office said that the government should issue a law insuring that the members of the now dissolved NDP do not run in any upcoming elections. Adel also demanded that the government purify itself from ministers who were members of the NDP and insure that the first post-Mubarak parliament is purged from those who serve the interests of the NDP.

Adel said that if it turns out that the members of the dissolved local councils are behind yesterday clashes, as circulating reports hint, “comprehensive action” should be taken against them, including banning them from running for office again. Yesterday, Egypt’s administrative court issued an order to dissolve local councils across the country and some believe that yesterday's clashes were a retaliation regarding that decision.
