Experts believe the flash may have been the result of a fuel tank or engine explosion, though they have not ruled out the possibility of an on-board bomb
A US infrared satellite captured a heat flash over Egypt's Sinai around the same time a Russian airliner crashed in the peninsula on Saturday, CBS News reported Monday.
The data from the satellite is currently being analysed, with experts saying that the flash could have been the result of several things, including a bomb on the plane or an explosion in the fuel tank or engine due to mechanical failure.
Within hours of the crash, Sinai-based ISIS affiliate Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis claimed it had downed the flight in response to Russian attacks on Islamist militants in Syria. Cairo, Moscow and Washington have downplayed the claim, although analysts have not ruled out that a bomb may have been planted on board.
