The man is charged with arson attack against church in Kerdasa district in Giza governorate in August 2013
A Giza criminal court sentenced a man to life in prison for torching a church in the Kerdasa district of Giza shortly after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Ahmed Hassan, was originally sentenced to life in prison while tried in absentia, along with 70 other defendants also tried in absentia. He was recently arrested and re-tried.
Hassan was also fined LE20,000.
A life sentence means 25 years in jail, according to the penal code.
Aside from a torching a church, the defendants in the case were convicted of possessing bladed weapons and ammunition, as well as blocking roads, resisting authorities and belonging to an illegal group.
The five-floor Kafr Hakim church in the working class district of Kerdasa was subject to the arson attack on 14 August 2013. A number of halls and facilities in the building were damaged.
