Nasserite Ashour re-elected as Lawyers Syndicate chairman for 4th time

Ashour was an independent parliamentarian during the Mubarak era and former chairman of the Arab Nasserite Democratic Party


Prominent lawyer Sameh Ashour was re-elected for the fourth time as chairman of Egypt's Lawyers Syndicate on Tuesday, beating Islamist lawyer Montaser El-Zayat.

A judicial committee supervising the poll announced that Ashour gained 22, 987 votes while El Zayat came in second with 17,120, with 26 candidates contesting the chairman's seat.

Ashour, a Nasserite, was an independent parliamentarian during the Mubarak era and former chairman of the Arab Nasserite Democratic Party.

He served in the Lawyers Syndicate chairman's post from 2001 until 2005, then from 2005 until 2008, then again in November 2011, 11 months following the January 25 revolution.

The judicial committee said that it would announce the names of the 56 newly elected syndicate board members later on Tuesday. 304 candidates contested in the elections.
