Special events in parallel to Panorama
Ahram Online, Tuesday 24 Nov 2015
In addition to Panorama of the European Film’s extensive film schedule, a number of special events including workshops and discussions will run in parallel

Cimatheque partners up with this year’s Panorama to host two film workshops and a panel discussion to compliment the film screenings taking place across various venues.

The first workshop titled Screenwriting Masterclass by Marcel Beaulieu will be held on Thursday 26 November.

Beaulieu is a scriptwriter from Quebec, Canada, who has worked on over 80 projects throughout his career spanning 35 years.

His scripts and screenplays have earned him a number of awards including Best Swiss Film Award for Coeur Animal (2010) and recently the Best Script at Fespaco FF for Fahtma N’Soumer (2015). He has also worked on more than 200 award winning films.

Beaulieu has been consultant for the GroupeOuest film lab in Brittany, and has conducted various screenwriting workshops around the world, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Belgium, Switzerland, Congo and Lebanon and Algeria.

A workshop titled 1+1=3 will take place over three days starting Friday 27 November, and is to be moderated by two promising Portuguese directors, Gabriel Abrantès and Salomé Lamas.

Abrantès is an artist and filmmaker whose awards include the Golden Leopard for Best International Short Film at the Locarno Film Festival 2010 for his film A History of Mutual Respect.

Lamas’ debut film ‘No Man’s Land’ (2012) was premiered internationally at Berlinale and was screened in several festivals.

The two Protuguese directors work separately but share a unique vision and different interpretations of reality in their films.

A screening of five short films will be followed by a discussion about each film at Cimatheque. The films are The Tower (2015), Baby Back Costa Rica (2011), Video Home System (2010-2012) by Salomé Lamas, Liberdade (2011) and A History of Mutual Respect (2010).

A panel discussion featuring directors and crew members from some films in Panorama’s Crossroads section will centre on the topic of international collaboration in filmmaking.

The panelists will include Queens of Syria director Yasmin Fedda, and Memories on Stone producer Thomas Koessler, among others yet to be announced.
At Zawya on 26 November, a presentation will introduce the Robert Bosch Stiftung film prize.

Robert Bosch Stiftung awards three Film Prizes for International Cooperation annually. The prize, worth up to 60,000 euros, is given to teams of young filmmakers from Germany and the Arab world who create a project in short animation, short fiction and documentary.

The presentation, given by Christine Kopf and Karin Schyl, will be followed by a screening of the short animation Free Range, the prize’s 2013 winner.
