A compensation of LE1 million (about $127,000) will be paid to each of the families of a judge and a prosecutor killed early Tuesday in North Sinai’s restive city of El-Arish in a terrorist attack, Justice Minister Ahmed El-Zend announced Tuesday.

The attack involved several militants launching an assault on the Swiss Inn Hotel where judges supervising the ongoing parliamentary polls were residing.

Judge Amr Hamad was killed when a gunman went up to one of the hotel rooms and opened fire, while another attacker wearing an explosive belt later snuck into the hotel's kitchen and detonated the explosives, according to a military statement.

A third attacker driving a car rigged with explosives attempted to ram the hotel building before he was met with gunfire from security personnel, causing the bomb to detonate before reaching its target and killing the driver.

The attacks also resulted in the death of prosecutor Amr Mostafa, as well as the injury of 14 people.

This is not the first time compensations have been allocated to the families of members of the judiciary who died under unusual circumstances.

In October, Egypt’s State Litigation Authority paid compensation to the family of an authority member who was killed in a car accident as he was on his way to Assiut governorate to receive electoral ballot papers for the parliamentary elections.

Ahead of the parliamentary elections, the State Litigation Authority enacted an insurance policy with the Misr Insurance Company for members of the legislative body overlooking the electoral process. The policy stipulates that LE1 million is to be paid out in cases of death and LE750,000 (about $94,500) in cases of disability.
