French warplanes hit an Islamic State militant group command center near its key western Iraqi stronghold of Mosul, an official said Tuesday.

"The target was reached" in the nearby city of Tal Afar, the French official said, adding that the Rafale fighter aircraft took off from the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier in the eastern Mediterranean.

In Paris, the military said the strike was led with the US Air Force.
