Mohamed Zidan's fall of grace is likely to see him expelled from Egyptian Premier League side El-Entag El-Harby, who signed him in the close season as part of their plan to strengthen their squad with some experienced players.

The 34-year-old seemed determined to make an impact with the modest side when he opted to join them following more than a two-year jobless spell after he left Emirati club Bani Yas in the summer of 2013.

However, he has only made three league appearances so far this season and his commitment has been highly criticized by the club, who said they are considering terminating his contract.

"The board of directors might impose sanctions on him or annul his contract," El-Entag football director Khaled Mahdi said in a television interview following the team's 0-0 draw with Masry on Friday.

"Zidan did not adapt to the club and failed to fulfill his contractual obligations. He has been absent from training for many days now."

Zidan was a Bundesliga star, turning out for Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg and Mainz before successive injuries stunted his career and he moved to the UAE.

At his peak Zidan was an inspirational player for a massively successful Egyptian national team which, led by then coach Hassan Shehata, won successive African Cups of Nations in 2008 and 2010.
