Egypt's government says it will provide "urgent financial assistance" to the families of the victims of Sunday's blast in a Giza residential building.

Giza's Governor Kamal Al-Daly and Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali said LE10,000 (approximately $1,300) will be granted to the families of the three killed in the blast which officials said was apparently caused by a gas leak.

Thirteen others were wounded in the explosion. Wali said each will be compensated with LE4,000 (approximately $510.)

Both officials said alternative residences will be provided to the families affected by the blast.

Those killed include two women and a senior judge who was passing by the building when the explosion occurred.

The interior ministry quoted eyewitnesses in a statement saying that the explosion was most likely caused by a gas leak.

The ministry said an investigation into the incident was underway.
