After unexpectedly parting company with Jose Peseiro, Ahly have suddenly found themselves on the lookout for the Portuguese manager's successor with several candidates nominated for the hot seat.

Peseiro, who only took charge of Ahly last summer, has requested to annul his deal with the club on Monday night after being reportedly approached by Portuguese giants Porto.

The 55-year-old cited his surprise decision to quit by the incessant criticism he has been subjected to even before assuming his managerial duties, despite the full backing he received from the board.

With Abdel-Aziz Abdel-Shafi 'Zizo' appointed caretaker coach, the names of ex-Ahly boss Hossam El-Badri, Herve Renard, Manuel Jose and even Jesualdo Ferreira all come across as potential successors for Peseiro.

Herve Renard

Africa's best coach in 2012 and 2015, Renard has only parted ways with French Ligue1 side Lille in November last year.

In an interview with FilGoal.com, the French coach - who guided Zambia and Ivory Coast to Nations Cup titles in 2012 and 2015 respectively – said he would genuinely consider taking charge of Ahly should the eight-time African champions approach him.

"No-one has contacted me yet. The last time Ahly opened talks with me was nearly a year and a half ago but I was committed to Ivory Coast at the time," Renard, 47, said.

"Should Ahly approach me, I would really consider the offer. I said years ago that managing Ahly is a wish for me at a time when they were dominating Africa and regularly reaching the Club World Cup."

Hossam El-Badri

Hossam El-Badri was also mentioned as a potential candidate, as he is currently unattached to a club after failing to guide Egypt's U-23 side to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics following a nightmarish Nations Cup campaign in Senegal.

El-Badri's side finished fourth in a group comprising Nigeria, Algeria and Mali in December last year, a debacle that saw him leave after seeing out his contract with the Egyptian FA.

The 55-year-old boss had two previous spells as Ahly coach, during which he managed to win an Egyptian league and Egypt Super Cup titles in 2010 before securing the CAF Champions League in 2012.

Manuel Jose

Fan-favorite Manuel Jose also came across as a possible replacement, having steered Ahly to record-breaking triumphs on both domestic and continental fronts during a memorable six-year tenure between 2003 and 2009.

Should the 69-year-old Jose make a comeback to Ahly, it would be his fourth spell at the helm of the club – whom he last led to the 2010-2011 league title in his last of stints.

A decision to appoint Jose would understandably be a desperate attempt by the under-fire Ahly board to appease their disgruntled fans, who held the club's administration solely responsible following the failure to win a trophy last season.

Jose has been without a job since December 2012, when he was officially sacked as coach of Iran's Persepolis.

Jesualdo Ferreira

The last of candidates reportedly nominated to take the Ahly helm has been Jesualdo Ferreira, who suddenly exited Zamalek this season after leading the Whites to the double last campaign.

Even so, the appointment of the ex-Porto manager Ferreira looks to be far-fetched as he is currently in charge of Qatari side Al-Sadd.
