Burgers, fries and more

Finding a good burger in Cairo is not always easy, but some stops offer decent sandwiches to grab or sit and enjoy

Burger Fuel

A good burger dine-in destination — and particularly promising for a good lunch — is the branch of Burger Fuel on Road 9 in Maadi.

Burger Fuel is one of those burger places that gives attention to the frying of its potatoes — key to the full experience of the hamburger.

Their Fuel Basic is as good as their Burger Fuel Monster.

The Burnout, a char-grilled chicken breast with beef bacon, fresh avocado and Dijon mustard, and the V Twin Vege are also worth a try, if you are not into beef.

Their take out is also efficient, and so is their delivery, for the most part.

Burger Joints

##

This is a place where the sides (onion rings, wedges, fried veggies and chicken strips) could easily compete with the well above average quality of the sandwiches.

Their Dijon and Greek Burger could well be the best of their many good offers, but then again the Mango Chutney and Spinach Burger are certainly unique.

Their cheesecake is good, but their best dessert is the Oreo munchkins, which is addictive.

Burger Factory

##

There one could sit, eat and chat for around an hour, or just eat and watch the traffic, in the Zamalek branch overlooking the Hassan Sabry Street crossroads on 26 July Street.

If you are looking for a decent juicy burger, or if you are looking for a good vegetarian burger, Burger Factory offers both.

The extras at Burger Factory go well beyond fried onion rings to the caramelised onions, onion jam, pickled ginger and more.

Their salad is good and so is their cheesecake and chocolate fondant.

Butcher's Burger

##

The name might be inviting for some and not for others, but the food is generally good, especially the starters, with a gold star going to the cheese balls and deep fried mushrooms.

At Butcher’s Burger you can go "mighty" with any of the sandwiches (upgrade to 300 gms beef patty), or you can go bun-less (substitute buns with fresh lettuce) and substitute fries with baked potatoes.

And if you are in the company of someone who does not care for burgers and prefers a salad or a sausage, then you are sure to find sufficient choices.

If you are heading to the Abul Feda branch in Zamalek, and you happen to find one of the two sidewalk tables free, then you can enjoy a nice lunch in the easy winter sun.

Fuddruckers

##

Although it is not strictly a burger chain, it does offer sufficient burger choices, along with obvious sides and starters.

And typical of a burger chain, Fuddruckers offers its sandwiches in three sizes: 1/3 lb, 1/2 lb and 2/3 lb.

Only the veggie burger, which is not always available at all branches, is offered in one size.

Their double cheese is as safe or classic a choice as their Tumbleweed. The smoothies and milkshakes of Fuddrucker’s are the perfect end of lunch treat.

Fuddruckers is certainly a place for you to dine, but their to-go service is not bad, although the handwriting of the waiters on the top of the sandwich packaging could sometimes be hard to decipher.

Bufflo Burger

##

There are good things about Bufflo Burger, but the ambiance of their restaurants is certainly not one of them. It is an excellent take-away/delivery destination because of their two good qualities: prompt service, and perfect packing with accurate tags indicating which sandwich is which.

The variety at Bufflo Burger is diverse, ranging from old school to the bun-less light burger, along with the in-between range of chicken burgers and the Hawaii Waikiki.

Another plus for Bufflo Burger is that their fries are good.

The ultimate treat is the vanilla soft-cream, which is becoming a rare dessert in Cairo.

Lucille’s

##

Old habits die hard, and as such Lucille’s on Road 9 Maadi remains a destination for hamburgers, no matter the new restaurants that have opened all around the expanding capital.

If you are going for the Chili Burger or for the Lawless, or even bun-less burger, you are sure to get a decent sandwich with decent fries.

If you have company and you wish to have a few starters then you cannot go wrong with the Quesadillas and the Mozzarella sticks. If you wish for a larger variety then you can go for the sample platter.

Lucille’s is never short on desserts, which are usually to share in the wake of a rich lunch.

The take-out service is back, and the good thing is that the little paper boxes are well marked to help you decide which is which, without having to go through the ordeal of checking each sandwich.

Ovio

##

The diversity of mouthwatering choices at Ovio’s wonderful, and their sunny restaurants are certainly inviting. Their burgers are not something to miss. The quality of beef, the quality of bread and the freshness of the toppings are hard to beat. And their home fries are exactly that: homemade, and not just any frozen potato fries.

Quality and presentation/packaging is perfect. Almost each item on the dessert menu is the perfect treat, and the coffee is good.

The restaurant in Gardenia, 6th October City, offers a lovely lunch experience.

Roy’s Country Kitchen

##

Roy's remains a destination for classic burgers. It is no longer offering its sandwiches, however, with diverse sides. They all come with wedges.

Nonetheless, extras can be found at the slightly over-priced open salad bar.

The latest offering is the Pretzel Burger, which is an interesting item to try.

The pleasant sunny location of the restaurant is a plus. But the dessert buffet is somewhat over-priced.

Wild Burger

##

If you're not a recent graduate then you may not be keen to eat at Wild Burger, which seems a staple destination of young and bubbly crowds.

However, the sandwiches are worth the take-away experience, and delivery is quite prompt.

The fries of Wild Burger are a good complement to the good quality sandwiches that come in a large variety of beef and chicken burgers.

The sides and salads at Wild Burger are average, but they add to an otherwise above-average lunch.

The staff at two of their restaurants are exceptionally helpful and pleasant — something that adds to the experience of a good lunch.
