Black market tobacco costs the government around LE160 million a year, says a recent study
A recent study of the tobacco market in Egypt revealed that the illicit trade of cigarettes costs the government around LE160 million and stood at 2.1 per cent of the total market in 1H2011, versus only 0.01 per cent over the same period of time last year.
The reason for the increase, according to the study, is the implementation of higher taxes and the time lag between the announcement of new taxes and their actual implementation.
