Zamalek and Egypt keeper Ahmed El-Shennawi could be fined EGP 20,000 after posting a controversial photo of himself on Instagram

Zamalek's first-choice keeper Ahmed El-Shennawi is set to be sanctioned by the club after posting a controversial photo of him wearing a red jersey on Instagram.

After being omitted from the squad for Thursday's 1-0 league win over Enppi, Egypt keeper El-Shennawi took to his personal Instagram account to post a picture of him wearing a red shirt with the caption "Big Surprise".

"El-Shennawi will be punished for posting on his social media account in violation of the rules," Zamalek football director Gamal Abdel-Hamid told reporters on Friday.

"The fine imposed on him could well reach EGP 20,000."

The 25-year-old goalie has been understandably frustrated with the management's decision to leave him out, despite recuperating from a niggling knee injury sustained during a Champions League game at Algeria's MO Bejaia in April.

El-Shennawi, however, has said that the debatable picture was not an implicit message of him joining bitter rivals Ahly anytime soon, as some took it to mean, and that the whole post had nothing to do with his footballing career.

Despite apologising and stressing that he is fully committed to Zamalek, there was still no escape from punishment for the ex-Masri keeper, who is tied down to the club until 2017.

Teammate Bassem Morsi had been previously involved in a similar issue in November last year when he was suspended by Zamalek after posting a picture on his personal Instagram account.
