Unpaid housework in Egypt was valued at EGP 654 billion ($73.6 billion) in 2015, representing 32.8 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to a study by the state’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), published on Monday.
The estimate shows the value of chores such as domestic work and home maintenance carried out by households instead of hiring people to do them.
The estimates were recommended by the agency’s head, Abu Bakr El-Gendy, to be included in the calculation of GDP, it was revealed during a press conference announcing the study results on Monday.
Women represented 79 percent of the total value of unpaid labour in households indicating that their contribution was worth EGP 517 billion ($58.2 billion) in 2015, according to CAPMAS.
This estimate indicates that women’s contribution to the economy is significantly higher than depicted in their participation in the labour force that was calculated to be 23 percent in 2014.
