Weightlifter Mohamed Ehsan joins Egypt's absentee list ahead of Rio Olympic Games
Egyptian weightlifter Mohamed Ehsan has been ruled out of next month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro due to injury, national team coach Khaled Kurani announced.
"Mohamed Ehsan, who won the bronze medal at the World Championships two years ago and is one of the best Egyptian weightlifters, failed to recover from injury in time for the Games after battling it for three months," Kurani told reporters late on Thursday.
The 32-year-old could have challenged for a medal in Rio de Janeiro. He won the bronze medal at the World Championship in Kazakhstan in 2014.
"I thank God for everything and I hope the remaining Egyptian athletes can win medals and make us proud," Ehsan wrote on his Facebook profile.
Ehsan, who was already in Brazil to attend the Olympic Games, will now return to Cairo.
He is the third Egyptian high-profile athlete to be ruled out shortly before the Olympics get underway. Javelin thrower Ihab Abdel-Rahman will miss out after testing positive for a banned substance while hammer thrower Mostafa Elgamal will be absent due to a knee ligament injury.
