Hossam Bakr will give Egypt its first Olympic boxing medal since 2004 if he wins Monday's game in the men's 75kg quarter finals, having impressed in the earlier rounds as the country looks for its third medal at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Egypt's handball side also face a do-or-die situation as they must defeat Germany to keep alive their hopes of booking a last-eight berth after a disappointing 27-27 drawagainst hosts Brazil on Saturday.

Bakr reached the quarter finals after comfortably defeating Cameroon's Dieudonne Ntsengue by a unanimous decision in their middleweight contest on Friday.

The 30-year-old will face Mexico's Misael Uziel Rodriguez, a 22-year-old boxer who won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games last year, in the last eight.

A victory will guarantee Egypt a first boxing medal in 12 years even if Bakr loses in the semis because of rules that prohibit a third-place fight between those who lose their semifinals. Egypt won three boxing medals at the Athens Games – one silver and two bronze.

Egypt's handball team have a difficult task ahead of them after losing to Slovenia and Poland and drawing with Brazil, having only beaten Sweden in a memorable match.

They led against Brazil for almost the entire game but allowed the hosts to snatch a 27-27 draw at the end, leaving them fifth in Group B with three points. Germany are on top with six points.

The first four teams will advance to the quarter finals.

Egypt's wrestlers face a tough Ukrainian test, with Ahmed Saad playing Zhan Beleniuk, gold medalist at last year's World Championship, in the qualifying round of the 85kg category and Abdellatif Mohamed taking on Oleksandr Chernetskyi, bronze medalist at the World Championship, in the 130kg category.

Reem Qasem takes part in the women's 10km swimming marathon and Mohab El-Kordi and Youssef Selim feature in the qualifying round of the men's 3m diving springboard.

Egypt has so far won two bronze medals at the Rio Games, both in weightlifting.
