Illan Grapel will now face charges of incitement in addition to original ones of espionage, as state security prosecution presses forward despite US appeals
Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported that the Egypt’s Higher State Security Prosecution (HSSP) has tacked on a new accusation to list of charges against Illan Grapel, who is currently facing charges of espionage.Grapel is now also charged with incitement and spurring on groups to set fire to government properties.
According to MENA, Hisham Badawy, a prosecutor for the HSSP, interrogated Grapel and confronted him with the statements of eye witnesses concerning his involvement in inciting violence against police stations following the ouster of president Hosni Mubarak.
There have been talks and speculations that Grapel could be exchanged for Egyptian prisoners in Israel. Last week it was announced that Grapel would leave Cairo with US Secretary of Defence Leon Pentta, who visited Cairo to discuss prospects of an increase in economic aid to Egypt.
Grapel was arrested last June.
