Egypt's boxer Hossam Bakr misses out on Rio medal after losing to Mexican opponent
Ahram Online, Tuesday 16 Aug 2016

Egypt's middleweight boxer Hossam Bakr was just one step away from securing a medal at the Rio Olympic Games, only to be denied by Misael Rodriguez of Mexico who emerged as the winner on Monday.

Renowned for being combative and aggressive, the 22-year-old Rodriguez won the quarter-final fight of the 75 kg event 3-0 by points.

Both fighters got a warning each during the bout.

Having reached the semi-finals, Rodriguez is bound to secure a medal for his country.

Bakr was one of a few Egyptian athletes who were tipped to win medals, thanks to his impressive performances at Rio.

In previous rounds, the African champion and bronze medalist of the 2015 World Championships crushed Mervin Clair of Mauritania and Cameroon's Dieudonne Seyi Ntsengue.

"I'm very optimistic that I can win a medal at the Olympics. I might be drawn against a world champion but I am up to this challenge," Bakr was quoted as saying by local media ahead of Rio.

Bakr's dream to win an Olympic medal now seems to be quite unattainable since he will be 34 during Tokyo 2020.
