Farhadi wins Variety's Director of the Middle East award

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, winner of the Silver Bear award at this year's Berlinale, has been announced as director of the Middle East at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival


The Abu Dhabi Film Festival has announced Asghar Farhadi as winner of this year’s ‘The Filmmaker of the Middle East', which is awarded by Variety magazine.

The festival announced in a statement that Farhadi would receive the award next Thursday, becoming the fourth director to receive the festival’s appreciation award.

Farhadi won the Silver Bear at this year’s Berlinale (Berlin) festival for his film Nader and Simin - A Separation, which is participating in the festival’s Official Competition. The film will also be competing in the Oscars for Best Foreign Film.

The movie tells the story of a crumbling marriage and looks at the conflict between strict religious observance and the shifting values of Iran's urban elite.
