Art Alert: Talk on a century of Egyptian movie posters at Cairo's Photopia
Ahram Online, Wednesday 12 Oct 2016
The interactive talk will be delivered by Adam Abd El Ghaffar, who exhibited his poster redesigns at Darb 1718 last June

Egyptian artist and graphic designer Adam Abd El Ghaffar will give a talk on Egyptian movie posters over the past 100 years on Wednesday 19 October at Cairo's Photopia.

He will also present his own project titled Affiche Plaisir, in which he revisits movie posters from Egypt, Tunisia and Lebanon to create a collection of 45 minimalist posters that present his interpretations of iconic films.

In his 2016 interview with Ahram Online, Abd El Ghaffar said that "poster art is known around the world, but in Egypt we use posters only as an advertising tool, not as an art that could express certain ideas or directions."

With this in mind, he hopes to reignite interest in movie posters as an art.

Abd El Ghaffar's project toured the Middle East in 2015 with exhibitions held in Cairo, Tunisia and Beirut.

The artist has a ten year career in advertising and graphic design, having worked at leading advertising agencies such as Equinox Graphics and Leo Burnett.

In 2014 he founded his own studio, Adam Design, which offers branding services and specialises in poster design.

Programme:
Wednesday 19 October, 7pm
Photopia, 15 Somal St, Korba, Heliopolis, Cairo
