Veteran political activist and founder of the Kefaya movement, George Ishaq, on Monday, announced plans to run in upcoming parliamentary poll as an independent candidate. Elections for Egypt’s first post-Mubarak parliament are slated to begin late next month.

In 2004, Ishaq joined with other prominent political figures in forming the anti-Mubarak movement, Kefaya, or Enough, which launched a series of protest actions demanding that Mubarak not run for a further presidential term (in presidential elections in 2005), and that he desist from grooming his son, Gamal, to succeed him.

Ishaq, who plans to run in the Suez Canal city of Port Said, was reportedly asked by the liberal, Wafd Party, to run on its electoral list, but opted instead to run on an independent ticket.

If he runs, Ishaq will go head to head against Akram El-Shaer, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party who is also contesting the Port Said seat.
