Shenouda III discusses post-Maspero developments at closed-door meeting with SCAF members including Field-Marchal Tantawi on Monday

Coptic Pope Shenouda III on Monday met with members of Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) – including council head Field-Marshal HusseinTantawi – to discuss developments related to the violent clashes that convulsed Cairo’s Maspero district two weeks ago.

The talks followed a closed-door meeting last week between Shenouda and Military Chief of Staff Sami Anan at which the two men reportedly discussed the same issue.

The military council never provided any details about the earlier meeting. Church sources, however, say that Anan told the pope that all measures were being taken to promote national unity in the wake of the deadly confrontation.

Church sources also say that Coptic demands for a new national constitution had also been raised at the meeting with Anan.

Monday’s meeting marks the third such discussion between Shenouda and military council members since the 9 October clashes that left at least 26 Egyptians dead and hundreds injured.
