Signal developer says Egypt blocking access to its encrypted app
Ahram Online, , Tuesday 20 Dec 2016

Open Whisper Systems, the developer of the encrypted messaging application Signal, said on Monday that its app is being blocked in Egypt.

“We've been investigating over the weekend, and have confirmed that Egypt is censoring access to Signal,” the company said on its Twitter account.

The company added that it will “begin deploying censorship circumvention in Signal over the next several weeks.”

“Until then, Tor or a VPN can be used to access Signal.”

Days before the statement was made, Signal users in Egypt, mostly activists, have complained on Facebook and Twitter that the application is not working.

No official statement has been made by Egyptian authorities explaining the blocking of the app, with officials contacted by Ahram Online declining to comment.

Encrypted software allows users to communicate while avoiding surveillance from third parties, including state bodies and law enforcement.

A controversial cybercrime draft law was submitted to parliament earlier this year, though it has not been passed.
