The first Cairo edition of the Medfest Film Festival will take place 27-28 January, with screenings due to be held at the Cairo Opera House and Falaki Theatre.
According to the festival’s press release, the theme of this first edition is mental illness, with a particular focus on depression, psychosis and dementia. The festival will entail a two-day screening programme of various short films on these themes.
Q&A sessions will be held after screenings and will allow audiences to discuss the films with a panel of filmmakers, psychiatrists, psychologists and medical students.
The event's aim is to raise awareness on the subject of mental health disorders and the trauma they can cause to patients and their families. The purpose is to also break the stigma surrounding mental illness and dismantle false beliefs and stereotypes.
The festival has previously been held in countries all around the globe, including in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, Canada, Pakistan, South Africa, Australia and the United States.
