High commission for elections' chairman suggests that Egyptians abroad vote with their passports besides their national ID cards in polls overseen by diplomats
The chairman of the High Commission for Elections, Judge Abdel Moaz Ibrahim, announced Tuesday that he has presented to the legislative ministerial committee, headed by Minister of Justice Abdel Aziz El-Gendy, the Commission’s suggestions on how Egyptians living abroad may vote. The Commission's deliberations come after last week’s administrative court ruling that paved the way for Egyptians to vote in the forthcoming elections from outside the country.
Judge Ibrahim said that he suggested amending Article 39 of the constitutional declaration issued in March to include the provision for voting at embassies and consulates to be supervised by diplomats, rather than judges.
The Commission chairman revealed that he suggested separate procedures be introduced for the organisation of voting for Egyptians living abroad. Ibrahim added that he is investigating the possibility of allowing voters to use their passport rather than their national ID card.
Last week, Cairo’s administrative court ruled that Egyptians living abroad be allowed to at their embassies and consulates in upcoming referendums and elections, including the parliamentary elections scheduled to start on 28 November.
