A Giza prosecutor ordered on Monday the detention of three police officers for four days pending investigation into allegations that they tortured a man to death at a police station in Haram district earlier this month, Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The three officers are suspected of killing a 26-year-old man who was in detention on suspicion of killing his grandmother.

Police had initially said that the suspect fell ill while in custody and was taken to hospital, where he died.

However, the medical examiner's report said there were signs of torture on the deceased's body.

The Egyptian constitution stipulates that "torture in all its forms is a crime without a statute of limitations."
