The death toll from Egypt's Palm Sunday terrorist bombing at the St Mark's Cathedral in Alexandria has risen from 17 to 18 after one person died on Tuesday, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported, quoting a Church statement.

The combined death toll from the twin bombings in Tanta and Alexandria has now risen from 46 to 47.

In a statement, the Coptic Orthodox Church said Karim Ghattas Andrawes died in hospital on Tuesday due to wounds sustained in the bombing.

On 9 April, two suicide bombers hit St George Cathedral in Tanta and St Mark's Cathedral in Alexandria, killing and injuring dozens in the deadliest attack against civilians in the country's recent history. A total of 29 people died in the Tanta explosion and 18 in Alexandria.

The Islamic State group claimed the attacks, which were timed to take place on Palm Sunday at the start of Holy Week, thereby ensuring large-scale casualties.

Following the attacks, the Coptic Orthodox Church cancelled of Easter celebrations across the country, limiting Saturday night masses to prayer services, with a reception for mourners on Sunday.

Egyptian authorities say they have identified the two suicide bombers and the terrorist cells responsible for the attacks.

Cairo imposed a nationwide three-month state of emergency after the attacks, with the option of extending it for a further three months on a vote from parliament
