The animated adaptation of Kahlil Gibran’s acclaimed poetry book The Prophet will be screened at Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo on 23 April.

Since its publication in 1923, the collection of poetry has been translated to over 40 languages, and has never gone out of print.

The film is set in a Mediterranean seaside village, as it centers on exiled artist and poet Mustafa, and his house cleaner Kamila with her free-spirited young daughter.

When the three embark on a journey to Mustafa’s homeland, they must evade the authorities who fear that the truth in his words will incite rebellion.

Spear headed by Mexican actress and director Salma Hayek, the film was an international effort involving 10 directors, nine producers, and some of the world’s top animators..

Hayek, one the directors and produers of the film who also voices the character Kamila, has Lebanese ancestry and considers the film to be a labour of love.

According to an interview with AFP, Hayek described the film as a "love letter to [her] heritage," and said it was a "personal film" because her Lebanese grandfather loved The Prophet.

The all-star voice cast also includes Liam Neeson, Alfred Molina and Frank Langella and Quvenzhané Wallis.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and went on to be screened at international festivals including Toronto Film Festival, Morelia film festival, Annecy film festival, and Melbourne film festival, among others.

It won the Animation Award at The WIFTS Foundation International Visionary Awards, and was nominated for 10 others.
