Art Alert: Rock musical Leila at Cairo's Marquee Theatre
Ahram Online, Thursday 20 Apr 2017
The musical premieres on 20 April and will continue until 21 May

The Egyptian Musical Theater Troupe, in collaboration with Soft Power Productions, presents a modern Egyptian musical titled Leila.

Directed by Hani Afifi, the show is accompanied by the Nile Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mohamed Saad Basha.

Leila fuses drama with dance and music in addition to elements of a circus production, according to the musical’s official press release.

Set in an otherwise peaceful and quaint seaside town, the narrative unfolds over themes of love, magic, witchcraft and the ultimate prevailing of one over the other.

The protagonist couple, Leila and Karim, find themselves forced to navigate the murky waters brought on by the envy of certain resentful town folk.

The musical adventure develops over the tension between witchcraft and the moral virtuousness of the town people.

The entire story takes place over the course of one night and one day, with the circus performance occupying a focal temporal point in its chronology.

Programme:

From 21 April to 21 May, every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 8pm,
The Marquee Theatre, Cairo Festival City, Ring Road, Fifth Settlement, New Cairo
