Egyptian authorities say Polish tourist Magdalena Zuk, 27, died by her own hand in hospital

Egypt's Forensic Authority started Wednesday conducting an autopsy on Magdalena Zuk, a 27-year-old Polish tourist who died earlier this month in the Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported.

The autopsy is attended by Polish investigators upon the request of Warsaw, amid some Polish media reports that Zuk was a victim of rape and murder. Egyptian sources denied this claim, saying that Magdalena committed suicide in hospital due to her unstable mental state.

A statement by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that its consular service remains committed to "cooperate closely and fully" with the investigation led by the Egypt's Prosecutor’s Office.

"We hereby announce that the Polish Embassy in Cairo is closely following the proceedings in the case of the death of Polish national Magdalena Ż," said the statement published by the Polish foreign ministry.

"We emphasise that it is the responsibility of the Egyptian authorities to clarify the circumstances of the death. For its part, the Polish side seeks full access to information about the inquiry, including medical records, which will help ascertain what caused the death of the Polish citizen," the statement added.

A far right Polish blog called Storrmfront initially suggested that Magdalena was raped or abused during her stay in the country.

CCTV footage from a private hospital in Marsa Alam aired by Poland’s public TVP broadcaster showed the woman acting erratically and kicking at several men identified as hospital staff.

Another video broadcast by Polsat 2 channel showed the woman lying unconscious in front of her hotel room in a brace position.

Several reports also suggested that she was suffering from psychological disorders.

The statement added that the Polish Prosecutor’s Office will request Egyptian authorities hand over medical documentation regarding the deceased woman and undertake several additional activities, such as the hearing of witnesses.
