Egypt condemned on Tuesday an attack in Mali that killed at least five people and injured eight others Sunday at a luxury resort popular with Western expats just outside the capital Bamako.
In an official statement, the foreign ministry expressed its condolences to the families of the victims, adding that it supports the government and people of Mali in their fight against terrorism.
On Sunday afternoon, gunmen stormed the hotel, opening fire on guests and battling with French and Malian special forces deployed to free people trapped inside by the attack.
Four of those killed were guests and one was a local soldier who died in the firefight. Around 60 hotel residents were rescued in two groups by secuirty forces aided by French and UN troops.
The list of people who were rescued included 13 French citizens and several children.
On Monday, a new alliance of Islamist militant groups linked to Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack.
