High-ranking female religious official dismissed in Turkey

A Turkish women was let go from her high-ranking position in a religious foundation in Turkey


The staff of the Religious Affairs Foundation’s Women’s Activities Center is to collectively resign following the dismissal of their head, Ayse Sucu, according to the Turkish daily Milliyet.

Sucu is known for her liberal views regarding religion and women, and reportedly said that the decision to let her go was "surprising and hurtful."

The foundation’s head Necati Akceme said the decision was a result of a “new understanding” at the foundation. He said, without stating Sucu’s name, that her personal life had nothing to do with the decision.

Sucu who wears a loose headscarf, had said previously that wearing the veil is not a religious obligation in Islam.
