Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
The filmmaker's 2016 work Clash was Egypt's official submission for the 2017 Oscars, though it did not make it to the final list of nominees
Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab has announced that he will be an official member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The director’s critically acclaimed film Clash, released in 2016, was Egypt’s official submission to the 2017 Academy Awards for Oscar consideration.
Despite the film’s exclusion from the final list of nominees, Diab still gained much recognition for his work.
The artist will be joining the Writer Branch, one of the 17 branches of the academy that range from actors and directors to costume designers, as well as the broader Members-at-Large and Associates categories.
Membership eligibility is not based on candidacy, but on sponsorship. Unless they have been nominated for an Oscar, in order to be admitted, new members must be sponsored by two members of the branch they wish to join.
Diab’s entrance into the academy comes as part of a massive inward flow of diversity. This year holds a record 774 new admissions into the academy, with new members from 57 different countries.
In an attempt to diversify membership, the academy has welcomed 359 percent more women and 331 percent more people of color since 2015.
