Egypt’s Illicit Gains Authority has referred a financial director in the 6 October education department and six other employees to the criminal court over accusations of illicitly acquiring EGP 331 million.

The defendants were reported by the Administrative Control Authority, the regulatory body responsible for enforcing laws and regulations within state bodies.

The defendants have been banned from travel pending investigation.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has repeatedly stressed the importance of combating corruption within government bodies, and has hailed the efforts by the Administrative Control Authority in this regard.

Egypt was ranked 108 out of 176 countries in Transparency International’s 2016 Corruption Perceptions Index.

Egypt dropped two points in the 2016 index compared to the previous year, with a score of 34/100, Transparency International reported earlier this year.
