Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry is set to fly to Khartoum on Wednesday for a meeting of an Egyptian-Sudanese political consultation committee that aims to boost bilateral ties between the two countries, the foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement.

Wednesday's meeting is the third such gathering, with the first held in April in Khartoum and the second in June in Cairo.

The meetings come amid heightened tension between the two states over a number of issues, including Sudan's accusation that Egypt supports rebels in Darfur as well as the dispute over Egypt's southern Halayeb triangle region.

The tension has led to trade restrictions and stringent visa requirements.

Wednesday's talks aim to "discuss bilateral ties in a transparent, frank manner…and work towards addressing all concerns and obstacles to the development of bilateral relations," foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said in the statement.

The committee, which includes Sudanese foreign minister Ibrahim Ghandour, will discuss the implementation of a number of economic projects agreed upon at a high-level presidential summit between Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his Sudanese counterpart Omar Al-Bashir late last year.

The political consultation committee will discuss mutual political, economic and trade cooperation between Cairo and Khartoum

The committee is a sub-committee of the Egyptian-Sudanese high committee, which also includes sub-committees for military affairs, security, economics and finance, transportation, education, culture, health, water resources and agriculture.
