Four people were killed and 13 others injured when a four-storey building collapsed in a village in the southern governorate of Sohag, Egypt's health ministry said on Tuesday.

Those wounded suffered injuries ranging from deep cuts, bruises and abrasions, to suspected skull fractures, fainting, and coma, health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

Fourteen ambulances were sent to the site of the building following the collapse, the head of the ambulance authority, Ahmed El-Ansary, was quoted as saying by state news agency MENA.

Building collapses in Egypt are usually attributed to violations of building regulations, illegal extensions, and lax government oversight.
