Egypt's prosecutor renews detention of Alexandria Deputy Governor Soad El-Kholy in bribery case
El-Kholy is accused of accepting bribes in return for protecting businessmen from having their illegally-constructed properties demolished and paying related fines
Egypt’s general prosecutor ordered on Tuesday the detention of Alexandria’s Deputy Governor Soad El-Kholy and four businessmen for four days pending investigations into several corruption charges including bribery.
El-Khouly, the first woman to be appointed to such a position, was arrested on Sunday at the governorate headquarters and is accused of receiving over EGP 1 million in bribes from businessmen, who have also been arrested.
She is accused of accepting bribes in return for protecting businessmen from having their illegally-constructed properties demolished and paying related fines.
In 2015, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail appointed El-Kholy as the acting governor of Alexandria following the resignation of the former governor Hany El-Mesery, who stepped down after flooding in Alexandria caused by heavy rains.
El-Kholy became deputy governor after the appointment of Mohamed Sultan as governor to succeed El-Mesery.
